synopsis
All her life, Annie Prideaux has suffered through her brother’s constant practical jokes. But Jake’s last joke is one too many, she decides when he sets her up on a blind date with his friend Drew—neglecting to tell his straight sister one tiny detail: her date is not a man, but a lesbian.
Annie and Drew decide it’s time to turn the tables on Jake by pretending to fall in love with each other.
At first glance, they have nothing in common. Disillusioned with love, Annie focuses on books, her cat, and her work as an accountant while Drew, more confident and outgoing, owns a dog and spends most of her time working in her beloved vineyard.
Only their common goal to take revenge on Jake unites them. But what starts as a table-turning game soon turns Annie’s and Drew’s lives upside down as the lines between pretending and reality begin to blur.
rant
- sweet, comforting, chill straight up romance perfect for when I’m sick or feeling down bc there’s no spice
- Jae honestly has such a great writing style but I struggle finishing her books because I don’t feel the chemistry between her characters ‐ this one however is the first one where I didn’t really have that problem
- I feel like Annie and drew balanced each other out so well ‐ or more like drew balanced Annie out ‐ I loved that she was able to bring Annie out of her shell but at Annie’s pace ‐ she didn’t push her to do a bunch of stuff she was uncomfortable w/ like other similar books do which I appreciated
- The side characters were lacking in depth & flavor tho ‐ kind of just sporadically thrown in and lowkey just annoying (expect for Cad and Amadeus obviously)
- So many small little tropes in here that I liked (ex. taking care of someone while they sick) + friends to lovers is my favorite trope so I might be a little biased on this one
- I would’ve liked to see more of them actually being a couple ‐ I feel like the pacing was a bit off and the thanksgiving scene could’ve happened a little earlier and we could’ve gotten to see them as a couple for longer than just three weeks ‐ especially w/ all the doubts about whether or not they would last ending the book w/ their relationship being three weeks old felt weird ‐ this definitely needed an epilogue
- Also there being no real progress w/ Annie and her family?? Like I said the thanksgiving scene needed to be earlier instead of drawing out the angst too much which left no time for other important plot point at the end so it could focus on their relationship
- Would read again
