synopsis
Kyle Schafer had to grow up fast. Being a daughter of a reluctant mother and an older sister on top of that had practically guaranteed it. When she discovers that the stories her mother told her about her recently deceased grandmother might not be true, she treks to New Orleans to find out the truth about her own history.
Melinda Andrews loves New Orleans. So much so that she runs NOLA Guides, the top tour company in the city, knowing it will be handed to her by the owner and her mentor soon enough. When her unlucky-in-love best friend suggests that they go out so she can meet someone, Melinda sees a woman, who she knows is a tourist, and now, she can’t help but think that she should have said hello.
Ending up in New Orleans with her younger sister, trying to uncover the truth about her family, was never part of Kyle’s plan, but maybe that’s okay because meeting Melinda on a tour and figuring out that there was more to the story than her mother led her to believe might just be worth it.
rant
- this book was good ‐ super easy to read and a great start to this series
- Mel and Kyle were easy to love and were both real and honest characters ‐ Mel gives that one friend who super sweet and everyone just naturally likes but gets super swept up in their relationships (hard worker too) ‐ Kyle kind of just gives Capricorn vibes but like she has a water sign rising like a cancer or something fs idk why I’m getting all astrological for her but that’s just the only way I can think to describe her lol
- While the main characters were great the side characters felt a bit annoying to me ‐ I think she tried to give them a little something at the end but they were kind of just pissing me off honestly ‐ I want to try and read this whole series I really do but the way Bridgette was portrayed in this doesn’t really make me want to pick up the next book as fast as I did w/ this one ‐ I was more compelled by Jill honestly and Mayra
- The pacing in this book was a bit weird but I liked it ‐ It was pretty slow in the beginning and then somewhere around the middle things picked up and everything started moving really fast so maybe it’s a medium paced book?? idk
- I feel like one of the reasons I read through this so fast was to find out if the mom was a liar (which ofc she was) ‐ but holy fuck she was fucking awful and like the true definition of a narcissist which just made me feel real bad for Kyle bc she was the one who got blamed for all the narcissists problems :/
- I really liked the ending and the fact that she chose to start off w/ these two bc I definitely want to see more of them in the next books that’s at least an incentive to keep reading
- Also the fortune teller I look forward to seeing her again 😉 I like a little magical element to things ‐ gives it the whole “fated lovers” vibe ‐ if anything they were definitely perfect for each other
- Would read again ‐ but probably only if I like most of the rest of the series
noted & quoted
- First date
- Mel comforting Kyle after situation w/ her mom
- Jolie standing up for Kyle at the end
- Little moments at each other places especially Mel’s
