synopsis

Ambitious Daily Sentinel journalist Lauren King is chafing on LA’s vapid social circuit, reporting on glam, A-list parties while sparring with her rival—the formidable, icy Catherine Ayers.

Ayers is an ex-Washington DC political correspondent who suffered a humiliating fall from grace, and her acerbic tongue keeps everyone at bay. Everyone, that is, except knockabout Iowa girl King, who is undaunted, unimpressed and gives as good as she gets.

One night a curious story unfolds before their eyes: One business launch, 34 prostitutes and a pallet of missing pink champagne.

What on earth does it mean? King and Ayers join forces but they might find a lot more than just a passion for news on the dusty road to Nevada.

  • first Lee Winter book ‐ very good the plot was plotting but it was slightly boring at points which kept it away from being perfect for me
  • The characters in this were very loveable ‐ the entire book is from Lauren POV (third person limited) and she is a really entertaining character ‐ she has a good amount of sass and is pretty good w/ comebacks + she’s highly motivated and very ambitiousAyer’s gives Ice Queen and honestly her reasoning is valid the way we are so easily disrespected and dismissed in our careers just for being women is honestly sickening I hate it but I love that she got her payback and I can’t wait to see her character w/o that chip on her shoulder
  • The audiobook narrator was great but the readability of this book was mid for me I found myself getting really sleepy / tired during some of the less interesting interviews
  • This is a very plot driven story although there were some character driven moments for Ayer’s as we see her change as she becomes more comfortable with Lauren and starts trusting her ‐ I don’t think I’ve ever read a “journalist story” before they’re not usually my cup of tea but I actually liked the whole investigation part of this ‐ it reminded me of a detective novel ig but not as high stakes ( I mean it kind of was but not in a like someone’s gonna die soon if we don’t figure this out more like all of our lives are gonna suck in 5-10 yrs if we don’t expose this kind of stakes)
  • Lee’s writing style is very extensive and informative which I like ‐ she also has great character dialogue
  • The romance in this was definitely a back burner to the plot which was fine it burned very slowly and there wasn’t really much too it besides a lot of angst on both sides ‐ if there wasn’t a second book to this I might have had a problem w/ it but since there is it didn’t bother me as much
  • I’m not sure if I would read this again ‐ maybe ‐ definitely will read the second book though
  • Ayer’s giving Lauren her jacket
  • Lauren being jealous @ the end
  • Meals together
  • Car ride back from Nevada
  • Ayer’s calling in her backup during “the meeting”
  • Lauren defending Ayer’s from truckers
  • First kiss
